What happens if an intruder breaks the side window or door glass? 

If the system is engaged, access by the intruder would be difficult as it requires 2 hands to release the system from the inside. A device unique to this system, is required to release the door latch from the hallway. The door latch has a strong spring system ensuring a strong catch to the door. The door latch system may be placed at any height on the door and frame, as long as the system is installed no higher than 48” from the ground as required by Illinois State Bill 1371 and the NFPA 2018 Code recommendation.

How can administrators and first responders unlock the device from the hallway?

All authorized personnel and first responders will be provided with the release tool.

 

What if the system is activated while a teacher is out of the classroom?

All faculty, administrators and maintenance personnel will be provided with the release tool.

What is the position of the National fire codes concerning secondary door locks?

 

The NFPA 101 Life Safety Code 2018 Edison states the following changes that relate to;

 

Classroom Door Locking to Prevent Unwanted Entry.

 

Classroom doors shall be permitted to be locked to prevent unwanted entry provided that the locking means is approved, and all of the following conditions are met:

 

1. The locking means shall be capable of being engaged without opening the door.

2. The unlocking and unlatching from the classroom side of the door can be accomplished without the use of a key, tool, or special knowledge or effort.

3. The releasing mechanism for unlocking and unlatching shall be located at a height not less than 34in. and not exceeding 48 in. above the finished floor.

4. Locks, if remotely engaged, shall be unlockable from the classroom side of the door without the use of a key, tool, or special knowledge or effort.

5. The door shall be capable of being unlocked and opened from outside the room with the necessary key or other credential.

6. The locking means shall not modify the door closer, panic hardware, or fire exit hardware.

7. Modifications to fire door assemblies, including door hardware, shall be in accordance with NFPA 80.

8. The emergency action plan, required by 15.7.1, shall address the use of the locking and unlocking means from within and outside the room.

9. Staff shall be drilled in the engagement and release of the locking means, from within and outside the room, as part of the emergency egress drills required by 15.7.2.
